Shortly after Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed David Weiss as special counsel in the ongoing Hunter Biden probe, prominent GOP voices shredded the decision in statements and on social.
“David Weiss can’t be trusted and this is just a new way to whitewash the Biden family’s corruption,” Jim Jordan spokesman Russell Dye said. “Weiss has already signed off on a sweetheart plea deal that was so awful and unfair that a federal judge rejected it.
“We will continue to pursue facts brought to light by brave whistleblowers as well as Weiss’s inconsistent statements to Congress,” he added.
“Let’s be clear on what today’s move is really about,” House Oversight Chairman James Comer wrote. “The Biden Justice Department is trying to stonewall congressional oversight as we have presented evidence to the American people about the Biden family’s corruption.”
🚨STATEMENT🚨
This move by AG Garland is part of the Justice Department’s efforts to attempt a Biden family coverup in light of @GOPoversight's mounting evidence of President Biden’s role in his family’s schemes selling ‘the brand’ for millions of dollars to foreign nationals. pic.twitter.com/ZXMB1ngFX1

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy also weighed in on the decision, accusing the DOJ of possible obstruction and whitewashing of Biden family crimes.
“This action by Biden’s DOJ cannot be used to obstruct congressional investigations or whitewash the Biden family corruption,” he wrote on X. “If Weiss negotiated the sweetheart deal that couldn’t get approved, how can he be trusted as a Special Counsel? House Republicans will continue to pursue the facts for the American people.”
