Former President Donald Trump sat down with NEWSMAX on Monday night to discuss a wide range of topics — including the Senate’s bipartisan border bill.
Trump says it’s a “Democrat trap” and “one of the dumbest bills” he’s ever seen.
“Well, it’s hard to believe because I think it probably would mean the end of their career,” Trump told Rob Schmitt. “This is a Democrat trap. It’s a trap for Republicans that would be so stupid, so foolish to sign a bill like this. This bill can’t be signed.
“It’s not only that, it’s massive amounts of money going out of town, as we say … billions, and billions and billions of dollars and it’s so bad on the border. I’ve never seen anything like it. Actually, it’s one of the dumbest bills I’ve ever seen.”
Trump went on to say that “you don’t need a bill.”
“I had the safest border in the history of our country. We had no bill, and I just said, ‘Close the border.’ It’s closed,” he told Schmitt.
“We had the safest border in history, the history of our country, we had the safest border. Now we have, I believe, the worst border in the history of the world. There’s never been a border like this. Ever. I don’t care where you go … Third-World country.”
Senate Republicans have already started retreating from the bill, with reports saying minority leader and bill architect Mitch McConnell himself has done a 180.
“McConnell recommended to GOP senators behind closed doors that they BLOCK the border bill on Wednesday, per multiple sources, bc it’s clear that most Republicans are preparing to vote no — either because they oppose the bill or want more time,” reporter Andrew Desiderio wrote on X.
“McConnell explicitly recommended a NO vote on cloture on the motion to proceed, according to several attendees,” he continued. “McConnell said the problem isn’t what Lankford negotiated, it’s that the political mood in the country has changed.”
