The Metropolitan Police Department said in a press release that just after midnight Monday, officers responded to the 400 block of 11th Street, Northeast, for reports of an unconscious person.

When officers arrived, they found an adult man, later identified as 31-year-old Nasrat Ahmad Yar, of Alexandria, Virginia, who was the victim of a shooting inside a vehicle.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and transported Ahmad Yar to an area hospital, and after failed attempts to save his life, he was pronounced dead.

CBS station WUSA in Washington, D.C., reported that Ahmad Yar served as an interpreter for the U.S. Army Special Forces in Afghanistan. In 2021, he escaped with his wife and four children after the fall of the Afghan government to the Taliban.

There is a GoFundMe page running for Yar’s family; they’ve raised more than $114,000 for his wife and four children.

“By donating to this cause, you become a beacon of hope for [Yar’s] family, ensuring that they can navigate the path ahead with the support and stability they desperately need,” the GoFundMe page says.

Outgoing Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee discussed the crime spike in Washington D.C. earlier this year.

“There are a lot more guns in our communities now, a lot more guns than what we experienced over the course of my time here in the police department,” Contee told CBS News.

“When you talk specifically about the violent crime, early in this year, we had a couple of cases where we saw individuals just shooting people, shooting each other for no reason,” Contee said.
