House GOP members voted to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt on Wednesday for refusing to deliver the audio recordings of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s interview with President Biden.
The 216-207 vote fell along party lines.
“We have to defend the Constitution. We have to defend the authority of Congress,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said at a press conference ahead of the vote. “We can’t allow the Department of Justice and Executive Branch to hide information from Congress.”

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) says the DOJ’s refusal to deliver the tapes means Garland is hiding something.
“There’s only one reason why the attorney general would do that. He doesn’t want us to hear it. That’s why,” Roy said on the House floor Wednesday. “And there’s really only two reasons why that would be the case – either the transcript doesn’t match the audio, or the audio is so bad that he doesn’t want us to hear it.”
